Days 43-46 Sihanoukville, Cambodia
We thought we would treat ourselves to a beach vacation after our 12 days in Tanop in dirt and dust. At 7 am we departed Tanop with the director of TCEC and headed for Phnom Penh. We arrived just in time to catch the 9am bus to Sihanoukville. The bus for some reason drove for 4 kms and then sat on the side of the road for 45 minutes and then headed off again!
Finally we made it to Sihanoukville. It was a beautiful drive. Nice to see greenery again and mountains along the way. Got ourselves a tuk-tuk from the centre of town to the beachside area and settled into the ‘Coolabah Resort’, Australian owned and managed.
This was the pick of places to stay in Sihanoukville I reckon. Great swimming pool, pool table, Wii, lovely family room, good food and pleasant environment. Then you stepped out onto the street and dodged the rubbish and then you did the same on the sand and in the water! Not at all pleasant.
We went to a neighbouring beach called Otres Beach and it was cleaner. Steve and Harris returned the next day for a morning of sailing and had a lovely time. Patrick and I spent some time on the beach making sand temples (not castles!). Returned to the hotel for a burger and swim and then we all finished the day at ‘Top Cat’ Cinema. You book the time and the DVD (copy of course) and then sit in your private cinema at watch it on the big screen tv. Harris has wanted to watch ‘Tron Legacy’ for months so that was what we watched. Harris’s rating 9/10, Patrick 15/10 and me … maybe 3/10!
In all we basically enjoyed our 3 nights in Sihanoukville, mostly because of the Coolabah Resort. My recommendation though would be to skip it altogether and spend more time in Kampot and Kep which is where we headed after. Those posts to come!
